I like maps. I like weird maps, the kind you won’t find in a regular atlas. Maps of countries that never existed – or never will exist. I’ve given up on categorizing the maps I’ve collected so far – irredentism, alternate history,… – and decided to just be a little less anal. So, just for fun, here are the weirdest maps I found on the internet.
This map for ‘Hospital districts for insane in Pennsylvania can be found online at this site.

When I worked as a newspaper reporter in West Virginia in the 1980s, a fellow reporter — and a WV native — told me that the state mental hospital (I don’t know its name or location) divided patients into wards according to which county they came from : thus the hospital itself formed a little map of West Virginia, with lunatics from say Logan county accommodated next door to lunatics from Kanawha County &c. I thought it was an arrangement one might have read about in Foucault, or Borges.

Hi and hello from Germany — great collection so far.
Is there a way to get in contact, in order to give some
hints about more stuff?
Regards
Reinhold

Hello Reinhold,
Thanks for the compliment. I’ve been meaning to reply to all the comments on this blog, but haven’t gotten round to it yet, due to lack of time (and to the fact that this blog has taken off in a way I hadn’t expected – which is nice). Suggestions are more than welcome in the form of comments, or via wegmetconsensusgothiek@hotmail.com.

I would like to see a world map of UFO sightings which would show where more unusual things appear in a more concentrated area.

That’s a weird thing to like. Not quite as weird as that Pennsylvania map, I still don’t fully understand it.
