9 – Germany wins World War I(French worst case scenario)

What would Europe have looked like, had Imperial Germany won World War One? This image is taken off a French magazine at the start of the war, painting an exaggerated picture of German (and Austro-Hungarian) land-grabs in a Europe dominated by the victorious Central powers.

In this Europe, ‘grande Allemagne’ has gobbled up all of Luxembourg and Belgium, most of France (leaving only a mini-French state around Biarritz) and extends far into Eastern Europe. Great Britain is a German colony, Ireland a dependency of Austro-Hungary, which rules most of southern and eastern Europe.

  2. From what’s written below the map this is from a French magazine right *after* the Great War. The map is also sourced in the London newspaper Daily Mail, which sources it in the German post war plans.

  5. What is really bizzare about this map, even though it is supposed to be based on German post WW1 plans for Europe, assuming the Central Powers were victorious rather than the other way around, is that it shows an independent Romania in the middle of a greatly enlarged Austro-Hungarian Empire, while all the other states in the Balkans were incorperated into Austria-Hungary. As for the tiny rump French state, it most likely would have been a German client state.

  6. This map sure was french warpropaganda. The “Septemberplan” of the german gouvernment descripes the plans after a victory of the german empire:
Annexion of large parts of belgium/flandern and a few economical interessting areas arround Metz (france) and whole Luxembourg as a federal state of the empire in the west.

For the eastern borders you only have to search vor the peace of Brest-Litowsk from 1917. Annexion of parts of Kurland an Livland here with standing german troops in the other still-russian parts of the balticum. Between Germany and Russia there should be established some “puffer”-states including poland, and the ukraine. Russia lost mostly parts with non-russian population. Of course, these states are planned to be economical dependent from Germany and bindet in a european free trade area (together with france and german dominated).
Also interresting the reperarations, that russia had to pay are not to compare with the later payments of Germany in the peace of Versaille.

For africa there was the plan of “Mittelafrika” (middle-africa) a large colonial possession including the former colonies of french, britannia and belgium.

    Sorry for the bad english^^

…I have never actually seen what Germany’s war aims were in WW1.

Hardly seems worth the millions dead, does it ? Nor the consequences.

  9. @James Grose:This strange situation can be explained by the presumption ( a little bit naive ) that two winners would have spared the neutral states, and Romania kept neutral 2 years during the WWI.

  11. The thing to remember about this map is that it’s French propaganda: the map maker is trying to make his audience feel a thrill of horror and outrage, and thus support the war against the central powers. It doesn’t tell us anything about German or Austro-Hungarian ambitions, but rather French anxieties.

That said, what a find! can we see proper citation information? What French magazine, what year, what number, date?

  12. This map is only French propaganda to motivate the war effort.
    Still yet its interesting.
I dont believe the Hapsburg monarchy would have wanted to add an even larger hostile Slavic population to its overburdening empire.
Overstretched already in this map it is improbable that the Austro-Hungarians who feared even annexing all Serbia would have desinged to incorporate yet more hostile Slavic peoples into its Empire.
Territory including the vast Russian Moscow area and the bulk of the Ukraine would seem unlikely.
..Let alone controlling all of secularised Ireland on the other side of the map {even before the partition}.
Germany alone aiming to control all these areas in the event of a victory of the Kaisar seems more probable.
I would think that Austria Hungary would have wanted to make gains closer to its own borders rather than adding more territories over in Ireland and annexing vast chunks of Russia.
Its interesting to note though that Bulgaria an ally is also incorporated into the Hapsburg domain in this map.

  13. Heh, would Habsburg Russia be added to Austria or to Hungary? Or would the Dual Monarchy become Trial?

    Comment by Anton Sherwood — July 1, 2007 @ 6:50 pm

  14. If you look carefully, it appears Russia might actually be allowed to keep some territory (a tiny section much like the French), in Crimea.

  17. Wow, this is a really interesting map. However, if the Germans really had won the war, I doubt they would have stopped with just Europe. Someone should make a map that would show how the rest of the world would be divided up in different scenarios of various wars.

  18. The Germans’ main objectives in WW1 were more territory in the east, at the expense of Russia. They would have set up satellite states in the territory of western Russia. (In fact, they did for a brief time in 1918 after Russia left the war.)

In the west, Germany planned to annex Belgium as far as Liege, extend their control in French Lorraine as far as the city of Nancy, and force Luxembourg to accede to the German Empire. Flanders (including Antwerp) would have become an independent state under German suzeranity, breaking the British blockade in the North Sea. And last but not least, more colonies.

This map has Austria-Hungary all wrong. They actually wanted Romania, not Bulgaria, and hoped to unify Romania under Habsburg rule in a future super-federation. Romania had a Hohenzollern king at the time, but I’m sure the Kaiser would have put him in charge of Poland, Ukraine or some other nice place.

  19. This map is absurd French propoganda. The Germans and Austro-Hungarians would have annexed some territory. However, this would have been on a much smaller scale, and close to their own borders. The Habsburgs had their hands full prior to 1914 maintaining what they had,and controlling the ethnic Slav population. Also,Britain would never have been over run by the Central Powers.Their powerful navy was superior to the Germans. They would have destroyed any invading Austro-German forces

  21. I doubt it would have lasted long, for two reasons : Germany would be tremendously powerful, and may attempt to take over more land. Secondly, the people within the new German states would have (eventually) rebelled, as no one can own a piece of land like that (or, that large, with so many different people) even with an iron first. Even if it took 40 years, it would have happened eventually. The only way you own that much land is to give more freedoms to the people : an iron fist doesn’t work. Even the Roman Empire knew that, and would give great freedoms to it’s different people and nations.

  26. To #22:
Yeah, because who knows what could happen? Maybe some kind of nationalist dictator could rise up in France or Britain or Russia and incite the masses into conquering most of Europe while killing jews to fuel his madness. Or some kind of Marxist could rise up in one of those countries and create an empire that killed 100 of millions of its own citizens while trampling on every citizens basic humans rights. Thank god that didn’t happen.

  30. To all of you saying this is French war propaganda in various languages. This is in fact tabloid fodder, was first published in England, and according to the caption, was published in France after the war. It is thus British post war propaganda, but it’s was never intended to help the French war effort.
