44 – The World According to Dubya

Filed under: Uncategorized — strangemaps @ 11:50 pm

Post #38 of this blog showed a spoof map of the world, supposedly according to Ronald Reagan – the avuncular 40th President of the US, an icon of conservatism to some, a prime example of cluelessness to others (including those who made the map).

I’m old enough to remember that map when it was topical, and remarked in the post that I hadn’t seen any similar parody maps, updated to correspond to the world view of George W. (’Dubya’) Bush, a president similarly considered to be ultraconservative and/or not so bright.

I have to thank Leon, who replied to that post, for finding one here. It’s interesting to compare Dubya’s world view (or at least the perception thereof, by certain people) with the one shown in Reagan’s map.

Dubya’s map shows a fragmented US too, reflecting the partisan nature of his presidency, but his ‘home’ has of course shifted to the State of Texas (My Ranch).

California, which used to be Reagan’s home state, has morphed into ‘Librulfornia‘, an indication of the aversion towards the ‘liberal’ west coast (also referred to as ‘Left Coast’), shown by conservatives in the  vein of ‘Dubya’.

The rest of the US simply is the Rest of ’Merka, except for – again – the ‘liberal’ area on the northeast coast: (”terrorist coddlers here”) and the South, labelled ‘The Base’. This is a reference to the large section of religious voters, mainly in the South, that voted for George W. Bush in support of his Christian beliefs. Note also that ‘The Base’ in Arabic translates as… ‘Al Qaeda’ – although that is probably reading too much into the term…

As far as Latin America is concerned, it is divided simply into illegal immigrants (Mexico), Commies (Cuba) and ‘uppity democracies’ (the rest).

Large parts of the rest of the world are simply defined in terms of their usefulness: Alaskan, Atlantic, Pacific, Arab and Stan oilfields, Outsourcing HQ (India), Wal-Mart factories (China).

Europe is divided according to strategic usefulness: Loyal Ally, Unreliable Allies (Western Europe) and Bribed Allies (Eastern Europe). Scandinavia is just labelled ‘cold‘, and the Russians – though no longer Communist – are still ‘Ruskies‘.

Troublespots are Iraq (’Not Vietnam‘), the ‘Axiseses of Evil‘ (probably Iran, maybe Syria) and North Korea (’Trouble‘).

Australia, without oil or restless natives, just simply is a ‘Boring Landmass‘. And Canada is ‘Just like the United States‘, except the part where the ‘French’ live.

  2. The **ONLY** country labeled its real name is …. Israel ! Why ? The designer of this map eludes the fact Israel is very very important to “dubya” and his neo-cons friends. Did he not dare making fun of them ? He could have called the place “my bosses”, maybe ? Or the 51st state ? Or something else ?

  3. [...] [...]

  4. Altogether hilarious. Ridiculous to quibble with something this funny and inventive. I particularly love “Not Vietnam” and “My Ranch”. But then, if I start listing the funny parts, I’ll run out of comment room.

  21. I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned how Africa was labelled “AIDS”, due to the prevalence of the HIV virus there, and also showing how many Americans tend to lump all of non-Saharan Africa as if it was a single messed-up country.

And no word of how Antarctica was simply called “Colder”. Indeed, it’s much colder than Scandinavia.

  23. This is actually probably pretty close to our “wonderful” president’s view of the world.

and zod: judging from the amount of smart people (that is, not Brainless Bushies) who have responded, you’re very wrong.

  24. Oh, and also… “radical?!!” What I find radical is Bush virtually repealing our Constitution with such stuff as the Patriot Act. Bush seems to be trying to turn the US into Pakistan.
-Gen. Pervez Musharraf is technically a military dictator. Yet no one seems to complain about the fact that the US President is also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

  28. Well, I understand that this is, of course, just a joke, but I would like to comment on that “bribed allies” label for Eastern Europeans. It seems that the artist has shared some of socialist/Russian beliefs/claims that Eastern Europeans are American friends only because of financial gain and/or that governments/leaders of those countries are “bought” by Americans and are their “puppets”. The truth is that East Europeans see USA as the main or even the only guarantee of their liberty and the only trustworthy ally in their centuries old struggle against Russian ambitions of imperial expansionism. This contrasts with their attitude towards countries of “Old Europe” which are, indeed, regarded as soft and pinkie “unreliable allies” living in illusions, unable to withstand Russian political pressure or potential threat. And this is despite them being in the same European Union.
