111 - The Comancheria, Lost Homeland of a Warrior Tribe

comancheria1.jpg

Under the presidency of Sam Houston (1836-’38, 1841-’44) the then independent Republic of Texas almost came to a peace agreement with the tribal collective known as the Comanche. The Texas legislature rejected this deal, because it did not want to establish a definitive border with the Comanche; for by that time, white settlers were pushing into the Comancheria, the homeland of one of the most fearsome Native American peoples the Euro-Americans ever had to deal with.

The very name by which the Comanche are known to us, is an Ute word for ‘enemy, foreigner’. Never more numerous than 20.000, this warrior tribe was a product of the horse – and therefore arguably as ‘native’ an American culture as that of the Euro-Americans, who introduced the horse to the New World. The Comanche emerged around 1700, when a group of Shoshone mastered the art of equitation, split off from the main tribe and migrated south from Wyoming, literally in search of better pastures.

From around mid-18th century, they roamed an area known coinciding with present-day north-western Texas, western Oklahoma, parts of southern Kansas and Colorado and eastern New Mexico. This area, first called the Comancheria by the Spanish, coincided with the Southern Plains in which the buffalo roamed, and in such plentiful numbers that the Comanche’s numbers increased significantly as well. This was also due to Shoshone immigration and the capture of enemy women and children.

The Comanche were the first Plains people to fully incorporate the horse into their culture, and were pivotal in distributing horse-knowledge to other Native American tribes. They also sold horses to white settlers… and stole many back, earning a reputation as horse (and cattle) thieves. This dovetailed with the tribe’s warrior reputation – they established their Comancheria by pushing the Apache out of the Southern Plains, and they raided deep into Mexico for slaves, wives, horses and mules.

Once, they got so far south that they encountered “little men that did not speak to us”: monkeys! These raids continued until long after the Mexican-American War, although the treaty that ended it stipulated that the US had to stop them. The Comanche were hard to tame. The Comanche threat was wiped out by that familiar companion to white expansion: devastatingly lethal epidemics, in this case of smallpox and cholera, which reduced the Comanche to a few thousand by the 1870s.

Their numerical strength broken, they were herded into ever smaller reservations from the Treaty of Medicine Lodge (1867) onwards. The near-extinction of the buffalo by white hunters provoked an unsuccessful Comanche attack, after which they were further marginalised. In 1875, the last independent Comanche band under Quanah Parker surrendered and moved to an Oklahoma reservation, which was eventually opened up to white settlement in 1906.

Today, the town of Lawton in Oklahoma is the annual venue of the Comanche pow-wow. Oklahoma holds about half of the total present-day Comanche population of 10.000, the rest residing mainly in Texas, California and New Mexico. The map in this post was taken from the Wikipedia entry on the Comancheria.

  1. There’s a classic movie called Comanche Territory about the attempt by white settlers and silver miners to move into the Comancheria in defiance of federal treaty, only to be thwarted by a young Jim Bowie (Macdonald Carey). I’m not quite sure how much of the story is fictional. Made in 1950, it is one of the first Hollywood movies to show the Indians in a largely favorable light.

  2. The history of ‘Euro-American’ migration is always interesting, especially in the context of an already populated continent. The great myth still seems to be that the push west was into empty land.

There’s a ‘Promise Line’ marked on this map. What’s the story behind that?

  3. @ Peter:

Thanks for the reference. It rings a distant bell, so I might have seen it - or at least read or heard about it a long time ago.

    @ Saturn5:

On that subject, ‘1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus’ by Charles C. Mann is a revealing read.

As for the Promise Line: the part of the Line just north of the Texas Panhandle seems to be the exact strip of territory that later became the Oklahoma Panhandle. But I can’t find any more info for the moment, so I’m very intrigued.

  4. “the Euro-Americans, who introduced the horse to the New World”

Just to pick a nit - current theory has it that the horse was native to the Americas (’way back when in Pangea days), but had died out in the New World well before contact. Technically, Europeans are credited with REintroducing horses to the Americas.

  5. An afterthought: Could the ‘Promise Line’ be related to the Trail Of Tears? I’ts the right area and the right time period.

  6. Ooh now that’s a gauntlet thrown down to my Googlin Skeelz!!! :-)

I believe the “Promise line” as shown in this map is actually the Missouri Com-”promise line”, of 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude.

  7. @ Dan:

right you are - basically, the Missouri Compromise (1820) prohibited slavery north of the 36°30′ parallel in the new territories west of the Mississippi acquired in the Louisiana Purchase (1803), except in Missouri.

  8. I always thought of the Comanche as an American version of the Mongols. Or at least, they were close to that.

  9. Many people do not realize, incidentally, that the American Indians held thousands of slaves. That is why many Indian tribes sided with the Confederacy when the Civil War came.

    Comment by Sartorius — May 17, 2007 @

  10. the “empty land” was indeed empty. Look at the land, and remember it says 20 000 people…now several million live there.
As for war, the Apaches might have started pushing back. It wasn’t exactly Eden.
But the main reason is that lands change.
The Mississippian culture was already in decline before Europeans came, as were the Coloradan pueblos and the Mayans, probably due to climate change.
However, the death knell was European diseases, especially Smallpox, which traveled up the trade routes from Mexico as far as Canada.

    Comment by Boinkie — May 21, 2007 @

  11. Yes, my ancestors had many slaves. But then, many freed african slaves held slaves themselves.

It is the muslims who ran the large african trading centers that fed the insatiable hunger for slaves in the Caribbean, South America, and much less so in North America.

As for Empty land, yes most was empty. That is appropriate for a hunter gatherer, nomadic culture.

  12. Very interesting! I just read a book “True Women” by Janice Woods Windle, which supposedly is her family history in novel form. It takes place in the Comanche Territory and concerns the origins of the state of Texas (in her opinion). Just another side of the whole story, both sides were violent.

  13. I gather from reading about the Indian nations regressing in number and find it amusing to see how similar they were dealt with like the other nations that are taken over. Just send in a disease and wipe them out and you can live on their land. That is an easy task for government chemical engineers like Sadam and George. Get rid of the subversives and replace them with higher than the standards. Where did all the Indian bones go? I wonder why such a great nation of native Americans never left a bone? Were they made into fertilizer and sent back to England? I understand Hitler turned some to fertilizer but it turned out that it was not just some but millions, but how many millions of natives disappeared and also never left a damn bone? Were these genociders ever written down in history like Sadams? No, because they were MASONS or the MASONIC BROTHERHOOD that made all of this happen like all over the world where they have made their footholds into the Kingdom of God as they think they are God for sure since they are UNITED STATES presidents and SUPREME COURT JUDGES(EASTERN STARS included) and all the way down the line and in every part of the world they are working to set about their philosophy and control to their end. They produce the idea of having workers do their deeds by infusing them with the idea of a promotion or reward for their obediance. Where are they taking the masses of people? You would have to dig deep as they are the most secretive brotherhood ever on this earth and they intend to rule out every “rebel” they feel fit to get rid of except their own, so if you want to get out of traffic tickets, and all things petty and high order genocide then ask for an initiation into the most secretive rulership under God. You might think of only one being under God and Christ and that is SATAN.

It really is a rise from the ashes.

  15. This map is bound to be of particular interest to anyone who reads Larry McMurty’s “Lonesome Dove” books. The pre-”Dove” books (”Dead Man’s Walk” and “Comanche Moon”) are set in this territory and concern the clashes between the Comanche and the Texas Rangers. Neither book is the equal of “Lonesome Dove” in my opinion, but they’re fun anyway.

    Comment by Matt — August 7, 2007 @

  16. Well there’s no bones because we did not disappear or die we went underground and are now reemerging. We may not be registered but will support anything Comanche or Native American…in my family alone there are hundreds my age from one Comanche great grandfather.

  17. Great article. This finding could possibly signal the pure genius of the lost warrior tribes. Some linguist say that almost all of the domesticated animals like horses,pigs,dogs,fowls,buffalo..etc were invented by the afro asiatic races..not by the indo European races. The linguist reached this conclusion by studying the structure of languages.
