152 – A Map of the Truelove River

This early 20th century postcard, Shewing the Course of the Truelove River, charts that stream from its two headlands in the Fancy Free Plateau (Angelina River) and at Indifference Hill (Edwin River). Those two flows unite at the Falls of Dislike, follow a united course as the Truelove River through the Valley of Disdain – between the Mountains of Melancholy and Determination Hills.

After the Evasion Rapids, a river branch dead-ends at Despair Marsh, while its main flow turns sharply south at Pity Bend, then avoiding Friendship Corner to reach Tenderness Crossing, Kissing Ford and eventually Trothplight.

Then Opposition Bend, Angrysire, Separation Deep and Misery Marsh complete the encirclement of Sentimental Meadow. When the river flows out of Misery Marsh via Correspondence Outlet, it manages to slide by Richrival Bend, Sickbed and Sinking.

The localities of Fathersheart, Telegraph and Convalescence (all across the river from Bannshire), the Truelove River opens up into License Channel at Nameday. After Ring Cape, Altar Bay and Honeymoon Island, the Truelove River has morphed into the limitless Sea of Matrimony.

This map is reminiscent of other emotional cartography in a previous post, namely the A German Map of the Empire of Love (#59). However, whereas that map portrays love as any one of several different, static areas, the Truelove River presents love as a process in constant change, leading to a certain goal.

I found this map here at the excellent, imaginative, fascinating website Radical Cartography.

  1. I don’t get it. Is this the feelings leading up to getting married or the feelings they have after getting married?

  2. Interesting! I was curious why the names Angelina and Edwin were chosen–Google reveals that they are characters in the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “Trial by Jury.” Is this a Victorian in-joke?

  3. It reminds of the “Carte de Tendre” (Map of Tenderness? I’m not sure about the translation from French to English), older than the map of the “Empire of Love” : the “Carte de Tendre” was created in the XVII century. I don’t remember who created it, but I will do some researchs about it.

  4. @ Abestar:
I’m not so sure myself. Maybe one needs to be married to get it :)

    @ Marissa:
Intriguing, but I haven’t a clue; anybody able to offer more background?

  5. It’s leading up to getting married. You start at fancy free. Trothplight is when you agree you are in love. Angrysire is when her father says no, then you’re separated and correspond, etc., until father’s heart softens.

Then you finally publish the banns, name the day, get the license and arrive at the altar!

After that I think you are in uncharted territory!

  6. This seemed to me at first as an original wedding invitation back… I just might steal it ;-)

  7. Oh, you missed the most obvious–this is a graphic representation of the familiar quotation: “The course of true love never did run straight,” And sure enough, on this map it doesn’t.

  8. http://www.MapJack.com has online map service and location finder in San Francisco showing street-level (street side) pictures of every city street and can search for businesses and actually see the front of the business.

  9. Hi
Picked up on this discussion through Google alerts. the map has some similarity to the Carte de Tendre, a ‘Map of Love’ devised by Madeleine de Scudery, a novelist and socialite of 17th century France. Her map was not abut marriage itself but was part of a movement to make the language of social intercourse more sophisticated, though critics have looked for references to her own love life. The CArte’s main river is ‘Inclination’ (attraction?) I think I have seen others more similar to this from Victorian times, with marriage as the main focus. Hope some of you may read about my novel which touches on De Scudery at http://debutnovelist.wordpress.com
or if you Google ‘carte de tendre’ you’ll find loads.
