168 – “Does My Brazil Look Big in This?”

This little piece of fashion cartography was made by Dutch artist Coriette Schoenaerts, based in Amsterdam and London. On her website, she explains why she went to the trouble to organize expensive clothing into the outlines of South America (here), the Netherlands (here) and Europe (here):

“The central theme of [Rails Magazine] was countries and borders. Contrary to the usual fashion photography, that shows off the newest clothes on a human body and wants to sell an ideal, I made still lives depicting maps and landscapes.”

One has to wonder, though, whether it wouldn’t have been better to compose the maps of clothing more ’suited’ to each map. But then again, maybe Coriette didn’t have enough tanga slips to fill out the whole of South America. It seems they’re rolled up to compose the Falkland Islands. Most of the South American countries are well defined, although Argentinians might object to that brown shawl representing the southern part of Chile, intruding too far into Patagonia. Also, Uruguay, Ecuador and the Guyanas will probably mind being left off the map, even if it’s a less conventional one.

Interesting and possibly unintended cartographic analogy: the folds in the bed cover resemble the latitudinal and longitudinal lines  on maps.

  1. That’s great! It reminds me of a post I did a year ago ‘Does this projection make me look fat?’ – haha. http://mappyb.blogs.com/mappyb/2006/05/does_this_proje.html

I love map humor in a way that only a GIS Analyst can… :)

  3. Well, yes that brown shawl is way too deep into the Patagonia, which is exclusively Argentinean.

At least the Malvinas (aka Falklands) are within the same color tone as the mainland.

  6. That map of Europe also seems somewhat incomplete. Where’s the former Yugoslavian republics?

She also treated Ireland as if it took up the whole island, including Ulster. Many Brits and Protestants won’t be happy with that…

I’m ignoring her leaving out such tiny countries as Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, and San Marino, most of which likely woudn’t show up on a map that size, anyway.

No, it won’t be the Protestants who are unhappy! Did you see what color she made all of Ireland?

  12. In the details, lots of little problems. But way cool how she got the ‘feel’ of each map right.

(Is that Uruguay or Paraguay? Where’s Ecuador? Chile del Norte and Chile del Sur? Someone needs a longer scarf)

  14. To objective argentinean … I think the thong (?) representing the Falklands/Malvinas is actually a deeper pink than the Argentinian mainland. In fact they seem to be the usual deep pink British territory was coloured in maps produced when we had an empire & ruled a quarter of the world’s population … but we did give most things back.

  17. About that brown shawl: perhaps the cartographer is a late supporter of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia. As a citizen of Chile del Sur, I’m deeply worried.
