254 - Ludacris’ Rap Map of US Area Codes

Filed under: Uncategorized — strangemaps @

“I’m a female and a feminist. I dislike the usage of the word ‘ho’. However, as a geography major, I find this song hilarious, and had to map it,” says Stefanie Gray, referring to ‘Area Codes’ by the rap artist Ludacris.

Rap, for those less familiar with the term, is a genre in which the rhythmic delivery of rhyme and wordplay constitutes the main element of the music. Rap relates to singing as racewalking relates to running – but that’s just my inexpert opinion.

Rap music has been criticised for its content, which often consists of crude and ludicrous bragging about the rapper’s lyrical, financial, criminal, physical and sexual prowess. ‘Area Codes’ could be considered as an example of this phenomenon, sometimes referred to as gangsta rap:

“I’ll jump off the G4, we can meet outside/So control your hormones and keep your drawers on/’Til I close the door and I’m jumping your bones/3-1-2’s, 3-1-3’s (oh), 2-1-5’s, 8-0-three’s (oh)/Read your horoscope and eat some horderves (sic)/Ten on pump one, these hoes is self serve/7-5-7, 4-1-0’s, my cell phone just overloads.”

“In this song, Ludacris brags about the area codes where he knows women, whom he refers to as ‘hoes’,” says Ms Gray, who plotted out all the area codes mentioned in this song on a map of the United States. She arrived at some interesting conclusions as to the locations of this rapper’s preferred female companionship:

  • “Ludacris heavily favors the East Coast to the West, save for Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Las Vegas.”
  • “Ludacris travels frequently along the Boswash corridor.”
  • “There is a ‘ho belt‘ phenomenon nearly synonymous with the ‘Bible Belt’.”
  • “Ludacris has hoes in the entire state of Maryland.”
  • “Ludacris has a disproportionate ho-zone in rural Nebraska. He might favor white women as much as he does black women, or perhaps, girls who farm.”
  • “Ludacris’s ideal ‘ho-highway’ would be I-95.”
  • “Ludacris has hoes in the Midway and Wake Islands. Only scientists are allowed to inhabit the Midway Islands, and only military personnel may inhabit the Wake Islands. Draw your own conclusion.”

Ludacris is not deterred by clever and/or strong women? The concept of Ludacris’ song reminds me a bit of ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’ by Johnny Cash, which, come to think of it, probably shares some subtext with ‘Area Codes’.

Map kindly provided by Stefanie Gray.

  1. Does Ludacris have any songs about murdered white co-eds?

  3. Totally fantastic map.

Plus, I definitely started humming “I’ve Been Everywhere” as soon as I started reading this — that song would make a great map as well. :)

  4. Maps can be misleading. Take area code 402 for example. On the map above it covers much of eastern Nebraska: corn, cows and circular irrigation. But for Ludacris, all the action in 402 is in Ho-maha.

  5. Great map! Surprised that he managed to get all around Maryland- I am originally from there and I wasn’t able to manage that!

  6. This map … is awesome.

And what about the Kansas City hos? You too good for them, Ludacris? (Just kinda surprised that a cow town like Omaha made the cut.)

    Comment by El Santo — March 9, 2008 @

  7. Also, I’m not sure if Johnny Cash’s song would have any subtext at all. Mainly because it’s not his style, but also because the line that contains any sort of subtext (”I’ve been everywhere”) rates pretty low. “Get Your Kicks on Route 66″ is probably more suggestive … which is to say, not very.

    Comment by El Santo — March 9, 2008 @

  8. Is the Midway and Wake Islands included because of 808? That’s of course also the area code for the state of Hawaii, which is considerably more populated.

  11. That’s URBAN Nebraska, probably. The two major cities, Lincoln and Omaha, are in the southeast part of the state and in the 402 area code.

I doubt Ludacris has ever been to rural Nebraska, but a gig at the Qwest Center in Omaha may not be out of the question….

    Comment by Luis — March 9, 2008 @

  12. Ha, of course it was urban Nebraska, but Luda never specifies whether he limits himself to urban areas or not. I just made the map to assume that he encompasses the whole area code and not just the greater Omaha area, simply because he’s that much of a gangsta.

Further proof that Ludacris may be a secret fan of rural areas: In his song “What’s Your Fantasy?”, where he names all of the places he’d like to have sex with a woman, he says, “On hay in the middle of a barn”. Wow, now that I’m looking at the lyrics, he also mentions going from the Rock to the Park to the Point to the Flatlands. Ludacris sure knows his geography, which is pretty admirable.

I should have also noted that while Ludacris could have just rhymed numbers, he instead researched area codes of major metropolitan areas that he probably really does have friends in. Nice effort.

  19. ^^^ That would definitely explain Nebraska, then.

  20. Its by no means perfect but there seems to be a correlation between urban ‘ho-villes’ and gay conurbations (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_village#Top_US_cities) notable rural area codes obviously being the exception.

  27. The call to 808 is a shout-out, something the original map maker may not quite understand.

    Shout out to the 2-0-6
    Everybody in the 8-0-8

So Ludacris isn’t rapping about “ho’s” in 808, he’s saying hi to people he knows in that location. It wouldn’t be surprising for him to have friends in the military.

In fact when the context is taken into consideration, a lot of the postcodes mentioned may become invalid. Especially those at the end of the song.

    Comment by Sam Bauers — March 10, 2008 @

  28. Haven’t heard this song, but I remember Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Jump on It”, rapping about, among other things, “the 702, where it’s legal to gamble, and ho’in’ is too.” And he name drops multiple area codes in Texas and Florida. Although it looks like his map won’t be as filled in as Ludacris’.

I do telemarketing for a sub-contractor to Verizon, and I am not allowed to have any reading material at my desk during working hours, so one of the only things I can do to occupy my downtime is to type random area codes into our computer and see where they are on the map.. 42. The thing with Maryland. MD originally only had two area codes: 301 and 410.

Then a few years ago because of all the new phone numbers, we had to get secondary area codes: 240 for the 301 region, and 443 for the 410 region.

He mentions only 301 and 410 but those two numbers represent all of Maryland.

Racewalking is running with the restriction that at least one foot must always be on the ground. And rap is like singing with the restriction that the words mustn’t come out with intentional pitch.

As for “ho”, Ludacris himself has a good sense of humor about the word, since in the song “Ho”, he claims that ladies AND men are hoes too. He’s not the kind of objectifier I’m against, he’s a funny guy with good beats. I’d kill to have a drink with him.

I’m glad the internet and Digg liked this though! Yay!

  132. Aptly named ‘personality’, Ludacris. I-95 appears to be a long road to hoe, indeed.

As for the ’singing and speedwalking’ comparison, I believe you are being far too generous. Singing is to rap as sex is to rape. Violent, perpetrated by mentally unstable men without the talent or social graces to “succeed” any other way.

  137. nobody gives a flying fuck about your resentment for a rap artist and a song that is absolutely harmless when compared to 90% of rap music circulating through radio right now.

If you think this is ‘gangsta rap’, you not only have absolutely no right to exert your opinion of the genre, you are a moron.

If you want real degradation of women, and ACTUAL potentially harmful content, download a ‘100 Miles and Runnin’, by a group called ‘N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude).

    You are a moron.
