264 - An Absolut Mexico
Ay caramba! Absolut Vodka has found a surefire way to put its US sales figures in a downward spiral. This map, used in a Mexican ad campaign, shows what the US-Mexican border would look like in an ‘absolut’ (i.e. perfect) world: a large part of the US’s west is annexed to Mexico.
Needless to say this map made its way to ‘El Norte’, annoying and upsetting many Americans – even leading to calls for a boycott of the Swedish-made vodka. What must be particularly annoying is that this map has some basis in fact.
Large swathes of the western US used to be part of Mexico. In 1836, American settlers proclaimed the independence of Texas, formally a Mexican territory. The US annexation of Texas in 1845 prompted the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), after which Mexico was forced to cede 525,000 square miles of territory (42% of its pre-war territory, 12% of the US’s current territory).
Mexico didn’t have much choice: a US army occupied Mexico City, and the alternative was total annexation. The Mexican Cession consisted of the territories of Alta California and Nueva Mexico, out of which were eventually formed the US states of California, Nevada and Utah, and parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
In this ‘absolut’ version of the world, the US and Mexico are about the same size. As gratifiying as it might be for Mexicans to see the loss of Texas and the Mexican Cession be reversed, this map managed to offend so many Americans that it prompted Absolut Vodka to release a statement:
“We are sorry if we offended anyone. This was not our intention. We will try to explain. Though you may not agree, I hope you understand.”
“We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population. This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.”
“Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US — that ad might have been very different.”
This map was sent in by Jeremy Yingling, Danny Dorfman, Nate Maas, Jim Yu, Nick Collecchi and Dubi Kaufmann. Here’s a link to it at the LA Times

That’s as funny as Chevy trying to sell the “Nova” in spanish-speaking countries.
No va = “no go”
Comment by Troy — April 5, 2008 @
Actually, I’m more shocked that Absolut admits to performing executions.
Comment by mollymooly — April 5, 2008 @
I’d like to see their maps for Palestine, Bolivia, Paraguay, Germany, Luxembourg, Serbia, Syria, Cambodia…..this is getting tiring. But you get the idea. Absolut Revanchism
Comment by wren — April 5, 2008 @
I guess Venezuela gets to keep the satellite viewable bottle of Absolut?
Comment by Nathaniel — April 5, 2008 @
That’s exactly what I was thinking wren. Imagine if they had done a similar ad in Taiwan, showing the majority of mainland China as Taiwanese territory. People fight *wars* over border disputes. It’s an issue of diplomacy that a vodka company shouldn’t be using in its marketing. Absolut can claim nothing but stupidity in making these advertisements.
Comment by C. Gerard — April 5, 2008 @
We’re such wusses in the states. Are the Venezuelans complaining about how in an “absolut world” half their country is crushed by a giant vodka bottle?
Comment by Brendan — April 5, 2008 @
Surely this would be more like it? http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2007/03/27/92-secret-soviet-plans-for-the-complete-removal-of-the-north-american-continent/
Comment by Rik Hemsley — April 5, 2008 @
I find it more interesting that, though they showed the former northern territories, they did not show the former *southern* territories. The Central American states down to Costa Rica were initially part of Mexico, but broke off shortly after independence.
And, actually, that border looks like it goes further north than Mexico’s ever did. It looks like it goes up to the Washington-Oregon border, rather than the California-Oregon border which was Mexico border prior to the Mexican-American War.
Hmm … there were some who advocated annexation of all of Mexico … perhaps in the US they could show an “Absolute World” with Mexico as part of the US …
Come to think about it, why isn’t it “En un mundo absolut”?
Comment by Nik — April 5, 2008 @
Or maybe they could run an ad in the US showing all of the former Oregon Territory as part of the US! Alaska connected by land!
Comment by Nik — April 5, 2008 @
Interesting choice of colors on the map. It looks like Absolut Vodka also thinks switching the climates of the eastern & western halves of N. America would be perfect too. I would not only live in a smaller, eastern US, but a drier one too.
And Venezuela is blood red from all their people being crushed by a huge bottle.
Comment by The Dude — April 5, 2008 @
Let’s get some perspective here: The US and Mexico have been on friendly terms for a long time; and Mexico is not making any territorial claims against the US. So comparing this situation to Taiwan, Palestine, Serbia, etc. is a bit of a stretch. Besides, the only Americans who are likely to take any real offense at this obvious bit of harmless humor are those anti-immigration bigots who hate to be reminded of the fact that a fairly large chunk of the US once belonged to Mexico, before we stole it from them.
Comment by Greg — April 5, 2008 @
Yeah, relax… it’s just a funny ad, not like we are invading Arizona or something.
Comment by Héctor Muñoz — April 5, 2008 @
Troy - That’s a myth.

Comment by Doola! — April 5, 2008 @
Also notice that the Absolut Mexican border is just a little too far norte.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think the old Mexican border was actually north of Cape Blanco. It was, more or less, where Oregon’s southern border is today.
@ Greg (#13) and Brendan (#6), good call; many of my fellow Americans are such humorless, easy-to-offend twits these days that I find it depressing. Seems we can only take a joke these days when it’s about someone else … seeing as the world’s supposed to be all about U.S. these days.
Now, a moment of silence for all those killed in Venezuela by the miles-high Absolut bottle, which Absolut will have much more to answer for than any ad.
They said alcohol is dangerous. Little did they know.

Comment by Nocixema — April 5, 2008 @
cape blanco was named by the spanish, why wouldn’t it be that far north
Comment by patrick — April 5, 2008 @
The Spanish did visit Oregon, and even further north, but they never had a strong claim to that area, and what claim they did have they surrendered before Mexican independence. Mexico’s northern border pre-Mexican-American War was at the northern border of California and Nevada
Comment by Nik — April 6, 2008 @
Yeah, the border’s too far north. The Cape Blanco name discrepancy’s from pre-Nootka Convention Spanish borders in North America, back when they claimed all the way up to Vancouver Island. And then the USA bought the Spanish claims to the area in the Adams-Onís Treaty, which was part of their claim in the Oregon country dispute, along with Robert Gray’s discovery of the Columbia and Lewis and Clark discovering Powell’s Books.

or, on lack of preview, what nik said.
Comment by jeff n. — April 6, 2008 @
As a mexican, I find it humorous and, yes, revanchist. And as angry/sad/etc. that I could be from the annexation of almost half of our territory, let’s think about it… a mexican California probably would have meant no Disneyland, no Hollywood, no Silicon Valley…
Just don’t do it again, ok? ;-)
Comment by sgenius — April 6, 2008 @
Gerard, I hope you meant that as a joke, because nobody in Taiwan would put out a map like that, even though the reverse is quite true… (Now of course you could point out that it says so in their constitution but that’s due to Chiang Kai-Shek. Getting rid of it would risk incurring China’s wrath….)
Comment by Chris — April 6, 2008 @
I’ll never buy another bottle of Absolut as long as I live and I plan to share their “humor” with everyone I know. NOT FUNNY ABSOLUT. Not funny at all.
Comment by Heather — April 6, 2008 @
Hi! The map is funny, hehe.
As a brazilian, I have no critics about the map. Because it favoured my coutry too! :P
I saw that Bazil annexed the southeast portion of Venezuela… near from the bottom right corner of the map. It seems like Brazil ocupied the venezuelan territory that lies at south of Orinoco river. This land, indeed, form a gap between two brazilian northern states (”Amapá” and “Roraima”) that “advance to north” from our main “Amazonic Basin”.
By this, our north frontier become more “round and beautiful”.
Thanks, and forgive my bad english.
Comment by André G. Bottan — April 6, 2008 @
Regardless of intention, a map that redraws political boundaries will be guaranteed to raise the ire of others.
What’s odd is that Absolut claims that they didn’t intend for this ad to be viewed outside of the boundaries of its intended region.
Dear executives of Absolut, I’d like to introduce you to something called “The Internet.”
Comment by duncan m. — April 6, 2008 @
Ahn… forget my post above. I checked on the map and I think was Guiana that Brazil annexed. This region are dubious on the illustration… But is something wrong on this frontier…

“We’re such wusses in the states. Are the Venezuelans complaining about how in an “absolut world” half their country is crushed by a giant vodka bottle?”
Are you kidding? With a bottle of vodka that is visible from outer space all to ourselves, we won’t complain.:-)
Comment by Juan — April 6, 2008 @
The map did weird stuff to our territory. On the one hand, there’s all the space the Brazilians take. But on the other, it seems that we take back at least a good chunk of the Esequibo. Weird….
Comment by Juan — April 6, 2008 @
Maybe those mexican bigots should give back the land they stole from the natives who stole it from each other.

I’m wondering what would happen to Mexico’s GDP if the border were redrawn that way. Second largest?
Comment by guyminuslife — April 6, 2008 @
Sadly, too many USA Americans have no sense of humor at all. I took a vote, and over 60% of the people were ready to boycott Absolute Vodka over the map. Worse yet, more people thought it stupid than thought it funny.
Of course, they have Mexico taking over a large portion of the states of Oregon and Idaho, and a larger portion of Wyoming than was already claimed.
Comment by godozo — April 6, 2008 @
I’m surprised nobody noticed that the compass rose didn’t follow the longitudinal lines. “North” is pointing slightly northwest.
Comment by Eugene — April 6, 2008 @
lame question re: GDP if the borders were redrawn. if they were redrawn *today*, yes it’d make a huge difference, but if those territories had stayed in Mexican control, you can bet that there’d be no LA, SF, Vegas, or Silicon Valley to speak of (at least, not as we know them). those places became what they are today because of how/when they were founded and built and by whom.
Comment by eliska — April 6, 2008 @
I can’t believe anybody would actually be offended by a simple vodka ad … that wasn’t even meant for them! It’s a joke. On a par with every joke about the Englishman, the Irishman and the Scotsman.

The reason why people “have no sense of humor” or “have a stick up their ass” about this ad is because it reflects a political reality that many of you apparently refuse to acknowledge. The reconquista is real. We are being invaded.

(btw…if you go to the Absolut website, register first or you’ll end up in an annoying loop)
Comment by LVO — April 6, 2008 @
This is a cool map.
The controversy over it is quite nuts though; all sorts of morons moaning about ‘how would Sweden like it if the Nazis occupied all the parts of their country that they did during the war’ and that sort of thing. I’m a bit scared as to how this sillyness will reflect on America should it grow.
Comment by Tyr — April 6, 2008 @
As a native born American (united statesian maybe we should say out of respect to Canada, México, and the rest of Latin America), am so NOT offended by this.
Of course, I am very liberal and am a hispanicist (study and teach Spanish, interpret and translate SpanishEnglish, have been to and love Mexico, etc.), so this should come as no surprise.
However, even as a reactionary xenophobic conservative… what’s the big deal here? Uh… we won. So they are poking fun at it for a MEXICAN MARKET ad campaign. Big deal. Get some thicker skin. Learn to take a joke. Truth be told justice was not served in the events that lead to our acquisition of those lands anyway, so why not be honest about it?
Comment by model consumer — April 6, 2008 @
It’s simply a misguided ad. Should be ignored like most of the noise that crackles for your attention.
Absolut is probably hoping for the controversy to hit the MSM, 60 minutes is already working on a story. Your marketing dollars go *much* farther that way.
Similar to when Mitt Romney didn’t pay to air his rebuttal attack ad in Iowa, but did play it for reporters so that it would appear on YouTube for free.
Wise up, people. They’re toying with you.
Comment by Roy — April 6, 2008 @
Why people are getting upset over this? Vodka ads are not meant to be taken seriously anyways… or perhaps I should drink Mikes Hard Lemonade and check my garage for a Ferrari, then bedroom for a hottie… and if they are not there, cry and moan about it on the internet. Let’s move on people, there are more important things to waste breath (bandwidth) on.
Comment by Chimbles — April 6, 2008 @
Correct “a large part of the US’s west is annexed to Mexico” to “half of Mexico is not annexed by the U.S.”
Comment by Neil in Chicago — April 6, 2008 @
I’m sure Mexico would take it as a ‘joke’ if Absolut plastered an ad showing it as the 51st state. Perhaps they might enjoy that.
Comment by Renee — April 6, 2008 @
I wonder if Absolut’s German ads show an “idealized” Germany with half of Poland along with the Russian exclave around Kaliningrad?
I imagine it would hurt absolut business a lot in Poland and Russia.
Comment by Drew Taylor — April 6, 2008 @
I also notice that it’s evidently not “Absolut” for Colombia: Panama’s still independent.
Comment by Lurker — April 6, 2008 @
Absolut should come back with an “Absolut Texas,” showing the original borders going up to what is now Wyoming.
Or if they have a really great sense of irony and don’t mind offending or confusing an entire state, how about an Absolut “Deseret,” the name Utah orginally proposed, with its original borders which ran from the Colorado River to San Bernardino . . . and featured a dominant faith that doesn’t drink.
Comment by Ed Darrell — April 6, 2008 @
its just an adverstisement people. If you take every advertisement seriously, you probably think cavemen still exist and that they are smart enough to fill out a GEICO application.

What if today’s xenophobes – who see every attempt to escape Mexican government as an attempt to bring Mexican government north, and every friendly gesture to neighboring states as part of a grand scheme to abolish the Stars & Stripes – had been around in 1844? “It’s bad enough that we won’t have limits on immigration from Mexico for another hundred years, you want to import millions of Mexicans all at once?!”
Comment by Anton Sherwood — April 6, 2008 @
LOL. Love it.
Comment by TangledUp — April 6, 2008 @
And what’s with the two little lakes in Maine and one in S. Nova Scotia?
And has anyone noticed that the Mexican states are deliniated (but not states in other countries, including the US (if they had they might have noticed that the northern boundrary extends above 42 degrees)), and the current Mexican states are deliniated, as well as states in the former US territory? (It looks like Texas is divided in twain, and the rest make up a large state. The current US-Mexico border seems to be wholly intact (here as an intra-state border). These new Mexican states seem to have names, but they seem to be too small to read.
This fact makes me assume that the map isn’t Absolute’s creation (ie just photoshopping an existing map) as it must have some pre-existence (as why would they bother to make new states out of the American territory just for a “gag”?) The plot thickens …

Actually, even Mexicans should be a little skeptical about what Absolut is saying. Absolut is basically saying that Mexico is a toilet bowl without the west half of the USA. How do they feel about that lil tid bit?

I am tired of hearing “Why Boycott?” Why not? If one decides and others follow, that’s the best way to vote, to express opinion. Maybe this is the tipping point. I hope so. Time to reclaim what was lost. I mean American values. Back to the things that made America great. If the US gives them back some land, they will just ask for more. Is it time to stop giving so much? It just makes other more resentful.

I am outraged that Absolut claims “What must be particularly annoying is that this map has some basis in fact”.
History Lesson Absolut:
Mexico attacked the US. We fought back all the way south and captured Mexico City.
In 1848 the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the US purchased Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Western Colorado from Mexico for the sum of $10 Million Dollars.
The US did not take anything away from Mexico, we were attacked by Mexico. We could have retained ownership of all we gained in battle, including Mexico City, and not paid out a cent.
It is time for the wealthy elite in Mexico(and around the world)to stop rewriting history and stop teaching (aggitating) the people of Mexico into thinking that the US took this land from them. It was bought and paid for.
If this land was still part of Mexico there would not be less poor people there, the rich would just be richer.
I know my history but I am not a math wiz. Does anyone know what it would cost Mexico to buy this land back from us? That would be the inflation rate on $10 Million from 1848 to the present + interest. If the land was for sale could Mexico afford to buy it back? I think the answer is probably no.
This ad was not accidental. To find out more about the plans the elite of this world have for us check out the following:
http://www.vdare.com/sailer/060129_sandiego.htm
http://www.infowars.com/articles/immigration/deisyseis_partone.htm
and what about the US Veteran who was accused of removing a Mexican flag that was illegally flying in place of the US Flaf on the UNM Campus? Why was he found guilty? Why have we not stopped all Federal Funding to this school? READ ABOUT IT HERE:

I still don’t get it. People flee Mexico because they do not like living there. So why do they sneak over to the USA and then act as if the gringos owe then something? Can someone explain why Mexicans have this sense of entitlement? We already have more than enough people willing to clean toilets and pick cabbage. We do not need any more!
The argument can be made that this territory once belonged to Mexico in the 1800’s and was “stolen” from Mexico. Truth is, this territory was a part of Mexico for only 20 years after Mexico got independence from Spain. When the land was a part of Mexico, it was populated with non-Spanish speaking American Indians and not Mexicans.

I think Absolut underestimated the simmering tensions over the war.
daisyg (107) needs to update her history. That’s what I learned around 1964 or so. Seems our own esteemed Mr. Lincoln wasn’t too enamored of the war. Wonder if she’s heard of the Gulf of Tonkin.

1. 42% of the West might have belonged to Mexico but only 1% of the population lived there, much of it being Anglo
2. Texas won it’s idependence before the war and was mostly Anglo, Mexico actually encouraged American immigration before the revolution to put a buffer between Mexicans and Indians (cowards)
3. The U.S. paid Mexico for the land after we squarely beat them (thank you Marine Corps), and after Mexico attacked Texas
4. Mexico sucks and they can have california back

Now Americans can get a small taste of what the Greeks go through with the Slavs that insist on calling themselves “Macedonians”!
And this is just a stupid add, mind you! Imagine Mexico actually changing its name to Texas and amending its constitution to include a clause calling for the liberation of their “Northern brothers”.
And the Bush administration was the first to recognize the FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA as a sovereign state - only because the Oil Consortium wants to built the AMBO pipeline through their territory…
So, if ever Texas or California get sold back, you need not look further: probably some Oil Conglomerate wants to avoid some taxes…

Yeah, calm down you all people, it’s just a funny ad. Americans have a strange sense of humor, they can laugh at everybody but they can’t stand being laughed at. Anyway, as they say: give the Caesar what belongs to the Caesar. Everything happens for a reason and we wouldn’t have so many nice things in this world if that part was still mexican, let’s be honest. I’m sure most of us mexicans who saw the ad just smiled at it and didn’t think at all about fighting to get that land back or something, it’s ridiculous. So let’s take this ad just as it was made for: to entertain, to gain your attention so you see their product. Besides, it was for the mexican market, let us have a laugh. Let’s take this with humor, we all know it’s just a joke. I smile at this ad, let the americans do the same.

In the US, we have tons of Mexican immigrants who work and live illegally. Ads like the one from Absolut inflames the passions of the many illegals here and can help stoke social unrest. It’s a major issue in the presidential election. The ad is certainly pandering to some fringe political viewpoints and is irresponsible.
