Yes its just a joke and people need to lighten up, but there are harmless racial and religious jokes that you wouldn't go blurting out publicly (as an ad does) for the same reason: sensitivities. I found that the 1980s Tory map(the on that was listed on here somewhere before) was hilarious, but it was a satire... not an advertisement aimed to boost sales.

Mexico sure as hell will never officially get that land back (people with backbones won't let that happen even if self loathing, ill informed liberals will), but there is the reality that the US can't control its immigration. You can't deny either that there is a noticeable amount of permanent immigrants (legal or not) that have no allegiance to the US. Many people take it as if Absolut is giving credit to people that want to settle the US for their native land... not settle in the US to become part of its patchwork.

By the way, is it normal for Mexican advertisements to have taglines in English? If this ad only ran in Mexico, why does it read "In an absolute world?"

rdpm - Spanish explorers named those places during their explorations of the Southwest during the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. There are also a large number of places in the Midwest with French names, but that doesn't mean that France extensively settled the region.

It is correct that only a small proportion of the population of the Southwest prior to 1846 was actually Spanish-speaking. American Indians (who most likely did not support either the United States or Mexico) formed the large majority of the population.

>1. 42% of the West might have belonged
> to Mexico but only 1% of the
> population lived there, much of it
> being Anglo

Oh yes?????????????

So why that 1% decided to call a wide portion of their towns
names in spanish???? like:
San Francisco, Santa Monica, El Camino
San Jose, Milpitas, San Diego, Alameda,
Sacramento, San Bruno, San Carlos,
Palo Alto, Santa Clara, San Martin,
Monte Sereno, Los Gatos, Pescadero,
Monte Bello, La Honda, San Gregorio,
San Mateo, El Cerrito, San Pablo,
San Rafael, San Geronimo, Vallejo,
Santa Rosa, Marina, Salinas,
Gonzalez, Soledad, San Miguel,
Paso Robles, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, Guadalupe,
Santa Maria, Santa Ynez, San Bernardino, San Clemente, Escondido.....

what bothers me is that Mexican illegal immigrants in the United States keep talking about how they're not illegal, that they're "in their homeland" and that the land was stolen from them over 150 years ago... sheesh, by that logic, we should all give the world back to Rome. >.>;

>Heck, everything
> would be better if Mexico ran it.
> That’s why it’s, umm, such an
> economic powerhouse and sparkle-clean
> corruption-free government.

Economic Powerhouse???? MEXICO IS BETTER THAN USA!!!

You are so f#$ing poor "Americans"...
You owe even your soul to the devil.
All of the nice things you have now
are due to the fact that you borrowed
money from other places.
You are just spending all your last
credit in a big fire and you can't stop it.

Maybe Absolut should look at it this way... If Mexico ran California and Texas, I'm sure the Absolut's sales would be better. Heck, everything would be better if Mexico ran it.
