278 - Ice Coffee Town, the Netherlands

Filed under: Uncategorized — strangemaps @

This is a print ad for a Dutch brand of ice coffee, the slogan of which is: ‘The Ice Cold Coffee Kick For On the Road’. The drink’s interest for itinerants is underscored by the product’s placement on a city map. The city might appear Dutch, with all that water coursing through the city center in the form of canals, but is in fact an imaginary construct: one doesn’t really need to strain one’s eyes to see the young lady emerge from the city plan to drink from the cup of ice coffee. A nice piece of zoomorphic cartography, which is fairly rare on a street-level scale. Some other examples discussed in earlier posts include Europe As A Queen (#141), Asia As A Horse (#165) and Scotland as a gallant piper (#181).

Thanks to Gérard van Teeffelen for sending in this image.

  2. Really nice.

Definitely a woman, but how do you know she’s young?

  3. I noticed they used a slightly different colour scheme than the one used by the main (only?) streetmap maker in the Netherlands, FalkPlan, but for the rest they look very similar. Of course they don’t have any examples on their own website but google images has some examples of people who haven’t received their cease and desist notices.

  4. Ah, I had forgotten that one! Nice! What I thought was particularly impressive about it was that all the names, of streets, canals etc., were completely plausible. When ad-makers resist the urge to pointlessly pun, you know they’re on to something good! I’ll excuse them the alliterations in ‘ijskoude koffiekick’, although they do sound like a moped misfiring.

  8. In which European countries is iced coffee most popular. I have a hard time believing that the French and Germans like to drink that stuff………

  9. Thanks for this wonderful image. It/She evoke Art Nouveau, mosaics, wholesome eroticism, and, of course, the taste of ice coffee.

    Great!

  10. Isn’t the word you’re looking for anthropomorphic, not zoomorphic? Or am I guilty of “speciesism”?

  16. I am a regular reader and think you put on a great blog - interesting maps and nice background material on them.

Thanks for pointing out this map is a hoax, or imaginary construct, I almost didn’t realize it.

(Sorry, the DHL-GPS art project story — http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2008/05/25/277-the-biggest-drawing-in-the-world/ — or rather the mass reaction to it across the net world, was too funny, in a sad sort of way, for me.)
