406 – “Caruso Can’t Touch You”: A Road Map to Success

the-road-to-success

I just love allegorical maps like these, if only for their delightfully straightforward semiotics. This map of the Road to Success depicts an actual road, winding up to success signified by a lyre.

This (literally) lyrical prize is achieved by first entering the Gate of Opportunity. People are running through, but some have already settled in to the sit-down life of ease and comfort in what looks like the Beer Garden of Bohemianism.

Some manage to pass by those delights to check in to the Hotel Know It All, because they hold to mottoes such as Nobody can tell me, or I don’t need to practice, or I’m a born genius, or yet: I don’t need system.

Similarly misguided cries are heard on the patio of the Mutual Admiration Society: You’re the Hit of the Age, You’ll Set the World on Fire, You’re a Wonder My Boy, or (my favourite): Caruso Can’t Touch You.

Those who avoid those three establishments of ill repute might still fall victim to the deep, dark well of Illiteracy, or the spinning, disorienting wheel of Conceit. A select few manage to board the train called Right System at the Railroad Station.

That doesn’t stop some from running along the rail track towards Success, only to succumb to the ugly hand of Vices, the spinning fan of Bad Habits (blowing its victims towards Oblivion), or the pitfall of Bad Reputation. Others fall prey to Charlatanism, or get tangled up in the webs of Jealousy and Do It Tomorrow.

Those who overcome all these perils will enter the gates of System. But while the train crosses a bridge across the river Failure, those on foot are threatened by the Cauldron of Misrepresentation, and tempted by Short Cuts.

Some do manage to wade across the river to the other side, but there must overcome Bad Temper, Carelessness, Shiftlessness and Bad Memory. Then there’s Lack of Preparation, a giant rock which the train can tunnel through effortlessly, while the surviving pedestrians must trek across it.

Sprees, Laziness and Bad Business Methods then still threaten them, until at last they come before two gates, the one for Weak Morals remaining forever closed, the Gate of Ideals open to the train (and some on foot).

Conclusion: you can be successful without adopting the Right System, but your chances are far smaller. And you’ll have to make a lot bigger effort to get there.

Many thanks to Varun Chablani for sending in this map, found here on Moonbuggy. The origin of the map is not referred to, but judging by the artwork (and the moralising tone – not to mention the reference to Caruso), it’s early 20th century.

  1. Here in Berkeley, the hot dog franchise “Top Dog” (which also has a selection of libertarian literature for perusing while you eat) has an enormous poster of that map on display, amongst various gold-standard slogans and other such stuff. Apparently the map has an ethos congenial to their politics?

  2. So, not to sound culturally illiterate, but who is Caruso?

    Comment by clamshell — August 13, 2009 @ 12:13 am

  3. Yes, Top Dog — hot dogs with a side of libertarian propaganda.

You can buy these posters from them, apparently:

  4. Oh, I prefer bohemianism… succes is for the loosers. :)

  5. Fascinating, and thoroughly reinforces why I hate both economic “libertarianism” and self-help books written in managementspeak. Give me the beer garden of bohemianism any day.

  7. Weak Morals is not a gate, but an elevator to the slipery slope.

    Comment by Stephen Moore — August 13, 2009 @ 1:14 am

  8. @Clamshell: Enrico Caruso, an opera tenor who became the first musician/star on the back of what was then the brand-new technology of recorded music.

  9. When I was growing up my sister had this as a poster on her bedroom wall! It worked for her, I guess, she strikes me as very successful, at least.

  10. This sort of reminds me of what the “Kingpins” in Amway preached. What reminds me of this is how big the trains are on this; almost as if there’s supposed to be spaces on this for everyone willing to go along “for the ride” (and of course everyone’s aware of how little space there actually is at the top).

I want to be surprised that they didn’t include “settling” as one of the pitfalls…but then that would be admitting that there’s different levels of success, and “system” wouldn’t dare want to admit that.

    Comment by Don H. — August 13, 2009 @ 5:09 am

  11. I wonder what that train on the circular track just beyond the “system” gate is? It doesn’t seem to be labelled.

    My suggestion would be “bureaucracy”.

  12. It’s the Pilgrim’s Progress all over, except for the train bit, which anticipates the introduction of modern means of transport on traditional pilgrimage routes in South Asia.

  13. I guess it all depends on how you define ’success’. I’ll cast my vote for the beer garden of bohemianism.

    Comment by Terry — August 13, 2009 @ 10:47 am

  14. SPREES!! What a great word. Who wouldn’t want to bounce on that springy board? The helter-skelter slide from the tower of Weak Morals looks a heap of fun too.

The view from the hill of Success is lovely, but most of the people are down in the valley having fun, so it’s pretty lonely up here…

  16. Given that “Bad Business Methods” is one of the major downfalls, I suspect that the “success” sought here is business/commercial success. That, in itself, is a crass and outdated 20th Century concept is it not? The “lyre” at the top of the hill looks more like some malevolent, two-headed, beast to me… but then it is hard to tell from my beer-soaked viewpoint down here among the Bohemians.

    Comment by Hoagy — August 13, 2009 @ 1:17 pm

  17. The moralizing is straight out of early-20th century “success” literature. But there is an additional “text”: The train running through the center. The message seems to be that if you board the correct train, you automatically avoid a whole host of risks that you would otherwise be exposed to while trying to attain Success. The train is labeled “Right System”, so I suspect the author of the illustration was recruiting people to become part of their “right system”, and thus take the reliable route to Success. My guess is that National Cash Register was recruiting distributors and salesmen for its products.

    Comment by Lurker — August 16, 2009 @ 7:48 pm

  37. And just like that, the Horatio Alger nonsense is justified. Music is one of those things where technical study and hard work matter as much as if not more than natural talent – and ’success’ is far less exclusive.

Looks like once again the Libertarians don’t get it. Sooner or later they’re gonna have to face the music.
